One of the first images that probably pops in your mind when you think of animals in Japan is that of a monkey soaking in a hot spring or a Shiba Inu, especially Hachiko. This is not the only place in Japan where you can get lovely shots of animals. These areas are also full of natural beauty and scenic spots. If you love animals and would love to visit such areas in Japan, then keep reading.
Foxes in Miyagi Prefecture
There is a Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture that covers a vast area and is a natural habitat for more than 100 small foxes (kitsune). Visiting in winter is best for snow shots with foxes wandering around.
Alpaca in Tochigi Prefecture
Nasu Alpaca Farm in Tochigi is known to be the first alpaca farm in Japan. Easily accessible from Tokyo, this is a great place to spend some time with these fluffy creatures.
Monkeys in Nagano Prefecture
Jigokudani (literally Hell Valley), close to Shibu Onsen in Nagano Prefecture, is known for its natural hot springs and the macaques that enjoy a warm soak in them. The best time to visit is between January and early March when there is enough snow. Looking at the zen-like monkeys will definitely help you relax.
Capybara in Shizuoka Prefecture
Although there are several spots in Japan where you can see capybara soaking in hot springs, the first place to have this was Izu Animal Kingdom. Izu is also relatively easy to get to from Tokyo and the area makes for a great weekend trip.
Deer in Nara Prefecture
Nara's deer are probably more famous than the heritage sites in Nara. You can walk through Nara Park, pet and even feed them.
Cats in Ehime Prefecture
Aoshima is a 1.6 km long island with more than 100 cats and only 15 islanders. The cats live freely live on the island and since there are plenty of abandoned homes on the island, there is no worry about shelter. The islanders and tourists take care of feeding the cats. Note there is no accommodation on the island.
Rabbits in Hiroshima Prefecture
Okunoshima in the Seto Inland Sea is also known as "rabbit island." If you love rabbits, you must stop by this unique island inhabited mostly by bunnies!! Apparently when last counted, there were 700 rabbits in 2013! The island has resorts and facilities.
