Let's take a look at some of the must-visit spots to fully experience the glorious autumn colors on day trips from Tokyo.
Lake Kawaguchi (河口湖)
Imagine the stunning sight of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji framed by red autumn leaves. Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchi-ko) offers precisely this awe-inspiring experience. Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, the lake serves as a gateway to Mount Fuji and is the second-largest among Fuji's surrounding five lakes. You can wander along the promenade beside Lake Kawaguchi to take in the foliage and the majestic mountain in one breathtaking panorama. Conveniently, the lake is less than a two-hour journey from Tokyo by train or bus. Whether you choose to make it a day trip or opt for an overnight stay, the experience is bound to be unforgettable.
If you plan to visit Lake Kawaguchi, don't miss the Maple Corridor (Momiji Kairo, 紅葉回廊). Here, you can walk under a radiant canopy of maple leaves and capture stunning photographs. To make your experience even more enchanting, a nightly illumination event lights up the foliage until 10:00 p.m.
The annual Autumn Leaves Festival, or Momiji Matsuri, also takes place from early to mid-November. During the festival, you can savor delicious street food. If you're looking to immerse yourself in Japan's fall atmosphere, this is an experience you won't want to miss.

Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine (新倉富士浅間神社)
Tucked away near the lesser-known Shimoyoshida Station in Yamanashi Prefecture, close to the Fuji-Q amusement park, is a hidden gem of a shrine. While it may not be widely recognized among locals, the Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine has gained significant popularity among international tourists.
The shrine offers a unique photo opportunity that's especially magical during autumn: you can capture a stunning Japanese red pagoda set against the backdrop of vibrant fall foliage and Mount Fuji. Come spring, the same viewpoint offers cherry blossoms instead of autumn leaves.
The path leading up to the shrine is itself an autumnal spectacle, adorned with leaves transitioning into striking colors. Though the climb may be strenuous, it's well worth the effort. You can capture brilliant photos of the transforming foliage and Mount Fuji both on your ascent and descent.

Spots in Kamakura (鎌倉)
Ichijo Ekan Sanso (一条恵観山荘)
Registered as a National Important Cultural Property, Ichijo Ekan Sanso has a rich history that dates back about 370 years to the early Edo period. In 1646, it is recorded that a tea party was hosted here, overseen by Akiyoshi Ichijo, the son of Emperor Goyosei. He held office through two reigns, adding to the site's historical significance.
Originally located in Nishigamo City, Kyoto Prefecture, this mountain retreat of the Ichijo clan may appear as an unassuming countryside house at first glance. However, it is actually a regal "teahouse" designed by Lord Ekan, infused with a refined sensibility and aspiration.
In 1959, the property was relocated to Kamakura. The building, along with its Japanese Zen garden and every stone, was meticulously placed to maintain its original configuration. By 1964, it received its designation as a National Important Cultural Property, further solidifying its significance.

The park offers scenic walking paths along the Arakawa River, where you can fully appreciate the changing colors as you stroll.
