Ponde Coffee in Ikebukuro serves the most springy bread!

Ponde Coffee While walking around Ikebukuro in Tokyo, we came across a sign that said "ぽ" (Po) in Hiragana. Called Ponde Coffee (ぽんでCOFFEE), curious, we stepped in!

The first thing that catches the eye are the variety of breads (Ponde) available: each one costs just 80 yen!

The bread here as Japanese call it is "mochi mochi" which means springy. The reason for this elastic texture is that the bread is made using tapioca flour. It's the first time we tried such a soft, elastic piece of bread.

The bread sold here "Ponde" is inspired by the Brazilian cheese bread called "Pão de queijo" and its much more dense than the one in Brazil.

Ponde offers 12 different kinds of bread daily. Five to six of these are standard and available daily but the rest vary. So the more often you visit, you're bound to find and try new flavors. The names of all the "Ponde" available are written on this blackboard.

Other than bread, you can also buy sandwiches, side dishes and sweets. You can also try out sandwiches and sweets made using the same flour as that used to make the springy bread. The store opens at 7 am on weekdays, so you can grab a bite to eat before setting off on your Tokyo adventure.
