When it snows in Tokyo

If you're visiting Tokyo in winter or early spring, pray that you get to experience snow in this amazing city. In 2018, it snowed once in January and February transforming the city into a winter wonderland.

Here's a collection of some of the photos captured last year. If you're into photography, you'll want to make a note of the spots we visited.

Sensoji, Asakusa

One of the must-visit spots in Tokyo, there is no better place to be when it snows.

From the stark red temple structures to women gliding in kimono, Sensoji transforms into a beautiful Japanese winter landscape.

A common sight is that of hand-pulled rickshaws (jinrikisha).

Tokyo Station

The redbrick building of Tokyo station makes for a wonderful contrast with the white of the snow. Whether you visit in the morning or evening, you're bound to be mesmerized by its elegance.

Tokyo Tower and Zojoji Temple

You probably need no introduction of Tokyo Tower. Zojoji temple is just a few minutes from this iconic landmark and when it snows, you see the massive sloping roof covered in snow with Tokyo Tower in the background.

Zojoji is also known of its many jizo statues and when the snow collects on their heads, they look even more adorable.

Ueno Toshogu

In February, the peonies (kan-botan, winter peonies) are in bloom at Ueno Toshogu Shrine in the precincts of Ueno Park.

Using a planting technique from the Edo period, each peony plant is sheltered by a structure like that of a straw hat. Check our feature on peonies in winter too!
