A new ordinance to prevent passive smoking in Tokyo

Have you ever felt that there are too many restaurants in Japan where people are smoking? Did you get annoyed by having a "no-smoking section" in restaurants as the smell of smoke and cigarettes would still infiltrate the entire place.
A new ordinance to prevent passive smoking was announced by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and things are starting to change gradually.

Mandatory smoking / non-smoking signs

First of all, from September 2019, smoking / non-smoking signs are required at restaurant entrances. Each establishment is required to clearly state whether there is a smoking area or a smoking room for e-cigarettes. If you're traveling with family, don't forget to check the sign on the door!

Completely non-smoking

In order to protect children from passive smoke, indoor smoking has been completely banned in facilities like school buildings, hospitals, government offices, daycare centers, and kindergartens.
Starting from April 1, 2020, indoor smoking will be banned, in principle, from all restaurants, bars, hotel lobbies, entertainment facilities and public transportation.

A much-needed change especially with the Olympics just around the corner. Do you think this will help curb the number of people who smoke as well? Hope it does!
