Make a note of these famous spots in Japan that are under renovation

All of us have must-visit spots when visiting a country. Can you imagine the disappointment if you visit a far flung place and end up seeing only the scaffolding? In order to avoid any surprises, we've made a list of sightseeing spots that are under renovation (mostly gearing up for the tourists that are bound to visit during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics).

Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima

Miyajima is most well-known for the floating tori but it's being renovated and according to the official website, no date has been provided for its completion.

The renovation started in June 2019, so it might take a year. The corridor along the shore that takes you to the shrine will go under renovation around January 2020.

Kiyomizudera in Kyoto

As you can see in the photo below, the main hall of Kiyomizudera has a scaffold. The renovation began in February 2017 and is scheduled to complete in March 2020. You can't get that perfect shot but still enjoy the woodwork joinery.

Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto

One of the spots that suffered serious damage due to the earthquakes in April 2016 was Kumamoto Castle. The entire castle seems to be under scaffolds and you cannot enter the grounds. The main building is expected to be covered till the fall of 2019.

Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama

Soaring to popularity among foreigners due to the film Spirited Away, Dogo Onsen is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan. The main building (honkan) saw renovation beginning in January 2019 and parts of the bath house will be closed for seven years. You can still enjoy a soak as two baths have been kept open.

Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, Tochigi

This UNESCO heritage site has plenty of temples and shrines in its massive precincts. The renovations are taking place in stages going on till March 2024. However, fortunately, the renovation of the main gate Yomeimon was completed in March 2017.

There are several other places going through renovations. So keep a lookout on Instagram or official websites of places you wish to visit!
