A world heritage site destroyed by fire in Okinawa

On October 31, 2019, a fire broke out at the Shuri-jo (castle) in Okinawa and completely destroyed the Seiden, Hokuden and Nanden buildings.

Shuri Castle was built at the end of the 14th century. The original site was destroyed by the US military in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa but it was rebuilt in 1980 and restored in 1992. The original site in 2000 (excluding the repaired part) was approved as a World Heritage Site. This fire is undoubtedly a heavy loss for Okinawa and Japan. The park around the castle has also been closed as of October 31, 2019.
