Osaka Metro unveiled a new automated ticket gate with a face recognition system to the media on Monday, December 9.
This new gate allows passengers to pass without carrying tickets or commuter passes if they register their head shots in advance; so elderly people, passengers with wheelchair, and people with strollers will be able to go through the gate without putting anything down on the floor.
Aim to introduce this new system at all 133 stations, including subway stations in Osaka Prefecture, by fiscal 2024, to welcome the World Expo Osaka is hosting in 2025.
The test will be conducted at four stations: Dome-mae Chiyozaki, Morinomiya, Dobutsuen-mae, and Daikokucho until September 2020. The test involves around 1,200 Osaka Metro Employees, and four different gates developed by: Omron Social Solutions Co., Takamisawa Cybernetics Co., Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solution Corp., and Nippon Signal Co.
Through the test, the company hopes to identify issues and make improvements.
