Akame 48 Waterfalls

Akame 48 Waterfalls (Akame shijuhachi-taki) is a series of waterfalls located in Mie Prefecture along Akame Shijuhachi valley, approximately 4 km long. This spot has been included on lists such as Japan’s top 100 waterfalls, and Japan’s top 100 forests for forest therapy, a nod to the beauty of this area. The clear water running in this ravine is also included in the ”100 Famous Waters of Heisei." This ravine’s most well-known feature is the Akame Gobaku Falls that is particularly powerful and a great spot for visitors to enjoy the view of nature’s beauty. This area is also known as the home to ninja training, and is a great place to experience what being a ninja entails! Visitors can try on ninja clothing and try out weapons such as ninja throwing stars, and wear specialized footwear for crossing the surface of the river.

Nunobiki Waterfall

Nunobiki is one of five waterfalls included in the Akame Gobaku Falls. At 30 m tall, it is the largest. It has a certain sense of mysterious beauty as it appears as if a single sheet covers the flowing water. The plunge pool at the base of the waterfall also measures 30 m in depth.

Senju Waterfall

Senju Waterfall also belongs to the Akame Gobaku Falls. The origin of its name (senju meaning thousand hands) comes from either the falling water resembling a thousand hands as it falls through the rocks on its descent, or looking like a Buddhist image of the goddess Kannon with a thousand hands. It is 15 m tall, and at just 20 minutes walking distance from the entrance to Akame 48 Waterfall area, it is relatively easy to access.

Waterfall and Autumn Foliage Collaboration

Akame 48 Waterfall area is also known for its fine autumn foliage. The peak autumn season is around mid-November. During this period, the intricate scene created with an illumination of waterfall and autumn leaves in the evening and night-time is very popular.
