Engetsu-to (island)

Engetsu-to is a small island located floating just out from the Rinkai Inlet and is the symbol of Shirahama. In the center of the island is a nine-meter-wide circular hole that has been eroded away by the sea creating an image like that of a circle ("en" in Japanese), thus giving the island its nickname, Engetsu-to. The official name of this small island is, Takashima which runs 130 m from north to south and 35 meters from east to west. The island is well known as a beautiful spot for sunsets, and is certainly the representative image of early evening in Shirahama. It is even included in the “Top 100 Sunset Views of Wakayama Prefecture.” During the spring equinox (around 3/23) and the fall equinox (around 9/21), many people visit the area to see the setting sun which fits right into the circular hole of the island. This is certainly one of the most beautiful scenic sights in all of Japan.

Glass Boat Tours

It isn’t possible to get on Engetsu-to itself, but there are glass boat tours that will take you as close as you can get to the island. The bottoms of these boats are glass so that you can see many fish swimming through the water as well as an underwater diving show.

Miracle Sunsets that Happen Only Twice a Year

The sunset around Engetsu-to is included in the “Top 100 Sunsets of Wakayama Prefecture,” who’s most wondrous views can be seen only during the spring and fall equinoxes. During these times, you can see the sinking sun fitting right into the circular hole of the island making for a stunning sight. It’s said you’ll be blessed with happiness if you get to see this miracle sunset that happens only twice a year!

Mifune Ashi-yu

Located on the outskirts of Shirarahama is a relaxing foot bath called Mifue Ashi-yu from which one can enjoy great views of Engetsu-to. So take a load off and enjoy the sea breeze while watching Engetsu-to right next to the ocean. The foot bath is free, so it’s also very popular spot among locals.

Access

From the JR Shirahama Train Station, take a Meiko Bus on the town loop line for 17 minutes and get off at the Rinkai bus stop from which it’s a short walk.
