Fudo waterfall (Sakuramatsu Shrine)
You will arrive at Sakuramatsu Shrine after walking through the shrine passage that is thickly covered with Japanese ciders and pines aged over 200 years. The shrine was named after a legend which stated that villagers were amazed to see cherry blossoms on a cider and revered the tree as a lucky omen. Many people visit the shrine to pray for an abundant harvest and good health.
The impressive 15-meter Fudo waterfall, located next to the shrine, sprays water into the air flowing with a gusto from the top. Fudo Waterfall Festival is annually held on May 3 as an important event of the Sakuramatsu Shrine, this is the time when you can see snow-melt water in the course of the waterfall.
The shrine is also famous as a spiritual site. You can find two trees attached together in the shrine’s premises. They are regarded as a matchmaking tree.
Access
Take a highway bus from the east exit of Morioka Station to Arayashinmachi (55 mins). Take a taxi from the bus stop (about 15 mins).
Take the IGR (Iwate Galaxy Railway) Line to Koma Station and then take the JR Hanawa Line to Arayashinmachi Station (65 mins). Take a taxi from the station (about 15 mins).
