Ijinkan District

Ijinkan district is an area where you can see a number of buildings used as residences for foreign settlers until 1940s. Eighteen out of 30 buildings remaining today are open to visitors. Those buildings and the streets around them have an exotic atmosphere and attract many visitors as one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Kobe. In addition to the buildings, various fashionable shops and cafes make this town a sophisticated, good dating spot.

Weathercock House

Weathercock House, the building with a weathercock and beautiful red brick wall, stands in front of Kitano-cho Plaza. It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property and also a symbol of Kitano, Kobe. It is best to have this area as the base for sightseeing of Ijinkan District.

Uroko House & Uroko Museum on the Hill

If you walk up from Kitano-cho Plaza to the top of the hill, you will see Uroko House & Uroko Museum with a distinctive wall that looks like being covered with fish scales. It was designated as a registered tangible cultural property of Japan. A great view of Kobe city can be seen from the houses stand on this hill.

Kitano Street

The area around Kitano Street is lined with houses including England House, Ben’s House, and Kobe Kitano Museum. You can look around many houses. There are many shops in a relaxing atmosphere which are loved not only by tourists but also the locals. Feel the mature side of Kobe at long standing bars, cafes, restaurants of many foreign cuisines, and import shops.

English Bar at Night: England House

The England House is more than 100 years old and furnished with antique furniture and household items. The second floor has a room with a collection of Sherlock Holmes articles. It is open to visitors for a house tour during the day, while open as a bar in the evening.

Kitano-cho Plaza

The base for sightseeing of Kitano, Kitano-cho Plaza is just in front of Weathercock House. It overlooks the town of Kobe for it is located on top of Kitanozaka slope. Next to it is a tourist information center where guide maps and pamphlets of “Ijinkan” (former residences of early foreign settlers) are available. You can see street performances on holidays.

Starbucks Kobe Kitano Ijinkan

The building for Starbucks Kobe Kitano Ijinkan was originally built in 1907. It was relocated and rebuilt after the Great Hanshin Earthquake. It is now registered as a tangible cultural property. Inside the building is thoughtfully furnished and offers the special atmosphere you can only experience here.

Kitano Meister Garden

It is a shopping spot for Kobe brand goods located in the former elementary school building consists of 20 workshops. There are shops for popular sweets in Kobe, Chinese dumplings, sake and grocery goods. The shops are on the second floor.
