Kushihiki Hachimangu

Kushihiki Hachimangu is a guardian shrine of Nanbu-han. Currently, the area that covers the south part of Aomori prefecture and north part of Iwate prefectcure protected by the Nanbu family. It is said the shrine was relocated in 1222. Nanbu Shigenao built the current main building in 1648. In Kokuho-kan, the museum, you can also see up close the Japanese representative armor crafts such as helmets and armors made in the Kamakura period which are national treasures. There are also workshops including wearing kimono and drawing on Japanese portable lanterns. An experience you can enjoy is one of the appealing points.

Kushihiki Hachimangu has a history of 800 years. All areas of Kushihiki Hachimangu have been designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese Government, and you can feel the weight of its history here. The atmosphere of the area surrounded by cedar over 100 years old is exceptional. You may feel the solemnity by standing there.

The festival “Kushihiki Hachimangu Taisai” is the biggest event of the year. Yabusame, Japanese archery on a running horse, Japanese archery contest, sumo tournament for boys, literary show, theatrical performance and services for the shrine are held. Many people visit the shrine to be purified or to pray.

Two national treasure armors

In Kokuho-kan located on the right side of the Kushihiki Hachimangu, two national treasure armors “Shiroito Odoshitsumadori Yoroi” and “Akaito Odoshi Yoroikabuto,” famous as an armor of Kikuichimonji (Chinese letter for chrysanthemum), are exhibited. You can also wear the actual armor here so you can enjoy the feeling of being a Sengoku warrior.

Adorable and rare, the lucky charms of “Hyotan”

In Kushihiki Hachimangu, lucky charms in the shape of “Hyotan”, or gourds, are sold. Hyotan sucks in the bad and pours out goodness and is known as a lucky symbol for preventing illness. When you wish for something, exhale into Hyotan three times and put the cap back on quickly. It is important to imagine that you are exhaling everything bad such as misfortunes and illnesses.
