Lake Toya

Lake Toya is a circular, caldera lake of about 70 sq. km. surface area formed by eruption of a volcano about 110 thousand years ago. There is an island called Nakajima in the middle of the lake where the national forest spreads and many Yezo deer inhabit this area. Lake Toya is surrounded by mountains including Showa-shinzan and Mt. Usu. The beautiful scenery is listed in 100 Landscapes of Japan and also chosen as the location of the G8 summit in 2008. There are Toyako hot springs with more than a 100-year history, amusement facilities, and ropeways on the lakeside. This is a popular resort that attracts many tourists throughout the year.

Toyakokisen

The pleasure boat that looks like a castle glides across Lake Toya. The boat is called Espoir and looks like a medieval ancient castle. It has a marble patterned floor and the observation deck where passengers can enjoy a view of the lake. Toyakokisen offers various courses including lunch cruises with packed lunch (Espoir only), Lake Toya cruise, fireworks cruise (summer only) and so on.

Toyako Visitor Center & Volcano Museum of Science

Toyako Visitor Center & Volcano Museum of Science that stands on the lakeside is a great place to learn about Lake Toya. One of their exhibits offers visitors to see the habitats of plants and animals around Lake Toya. Also exhibited are the history of the volcanic activities of the volcanoes nearby, and items that were damaged by volcanic activities in the past. You can see the highly intense footage of the volcanic activities shown on three large screens at the theater.

Usuzan Ropeway

Mt. Usu sits to the south of Lake Toya. The Usuzan Ropeway departs from the foot of Mt. Usu and reaches the top after 6-min pleasant trip in the sky. The observation deck on top of the mountain is a great viewing spot offering sights of both Showa Shinzan and Lake Toya together. Showa Shinzan is a mountain made from the eruption occurred in 1940. There is a footpath around the ropeway station on top of the mountain.

Lake Toya Hot Springs

Lake Toya hot springs started to gush out after the eruption of Mt. Usu in 1910. Its clear or yellowish brown hot water is said to have effects on poor circulation and cuts. Along with the usual hot springs, hand baths and foot baths are available for visitors who are pressed for time. There are 13 hand baths and four foot baths you can enjoy for free in the hot spring district. Among them are “hand bath of happiness” with a heart-shaped basin and many other baths believed to bring good luck for matchmaking, easy delivery of a baby and help in longevity.

Lake Toya Long-run Fireworks Display

Lake Toya Long-run Fireworks Display is held every day for half a year from the end of April to the end of October annually in Lake Toya. The night sky above Lake Toya is lit up with colorful fireworks for 20 minutes from 20:45 every night. They launch the fireworks from various places so that the fireworks can be seen from anywhere in the hot spring district.
