Muro-ji

The temple of Muro-ji stands silent in the mountain forest of Nara prefecture. Visitors climb the long stone stairway through the forest and arrive at the entrance of the temple. The temple consists of several buildings, and three of them are recognized as national treasures. It is an exceptional experience to see these national treasures in the abundant nature of Nara. Apart from the aforementioned, take your time as you climb the ancient stone steps and take a deep breath of fresh air while you find yourself surrounded by various kinds of beautiful flowers.

Kondo Hall

Waking through the gate and up the stone stairs, you will find three buildings, and Kondo Hall (golden hall) that stands in the middle is a national treasure. The slightly unbalanced roof of this building is one of its characteristics due to years of constant additions. This hall houses the principal statue of Buddha (Honzon), so make sure not to miss it.

Five-Storied Pagoda

Continuing up the stone stairs from the Kondo, there is the Goju-no-to pagoda which is the smallest five-storied pagoda, about 16 meters high, in Japan. The variety of flowers that surround this pagoda add vibrant colors to the scenery. Find the best angle and take some photos.

Abundant Nature

One of Muro-ji's distinct characteristics is that it is surrounded by lush nature. Since the temple is in the mountains, it appears different in each season with changes in the natural settings. Although Muro-ji is located a little far from the downtown area of Nara, this temple has many appealing features that other temples don't possess.
