The giant water tank in the aquarium was made to model the sea of Oga from spring to summer. The giant tank holds more than 800t of water and exhibits around 40 different kinds of 2,000 sea animals. Inside of the tank swim creatures such as red sea bream, striped horse mackerel, Japanese rockfish, green sea turtles, and so on. The power of this giant water tank is sure to impress its visitors.

Two times throughout the year, none other than the famous ogres of the Namahage folklore from the Oga Peninsula come to dive into the aquarium. These Namahage ogres appear swimming in the giant tank during the New Year and in February for the “Namahage Sedo Festival.” Only in Oga Aquarium GAO can you find such a sight. Aren’t the fish just as surprised as the kids by the terrifying form of the ogres!?

During certain times, tours are offered revealing the back scenes of the aquarium. It’s certainly a strange way to view the aquarium from above. Those interested should definitely take part in the tour where the GAO feeding staff offer detailed explanations while walking together above the tanks. These tours are offered every year from fall to winter.
